*2007: The Year of Patriotism in South Asia, Pritam K. Rohila, Ph. D.

Patriotism is often taken to mean zealously supporting our country and willingness to sacrifice everything we have, even our life and that of our children for our country.

But patriotism also means doing what we can to make our country better, to correct it where it is in error.

Rarely in the history of South Asia have its peoples been in greater need of this kind of patriotism.

The future of our nations is stake - in Afghanistan, in Bangladesh, in India, in the Maldives, in Nepal, in Pakistan, in Sri Lanka, and even in Bhutan, when it is about to transition from monarchy to democracy.

Some of the governments seem unwilling or unable to do what is necessary to set things right.

The citizens and well-wishers of South Asians nations can no longer bury their heads in sand or make excuses for the failure of their governments to live up to the needs and expectations of their peoples.

It is time we rise up to our responsibility, and show true patriotism.

As we approach the beginning of another year, let us remind ourselves that we all share a common humanity, whether we live in Colombo, Kabul, Karachi, Kathmandu, Kula Kangri, Kolkata or Kolumadulu.

Let us undertake to do whatever it takes help South Asian governments to ensure peace and progress in the whole region.

Let us commit ourselves to help create more space in our societies for divergent beliefs, opinions and perspectives and ensure harmony among its peoples.

Let us work for justice and empowerment for our women, children, minorities, and the less-fortunate.

Let us resolve to help engender hope, optimism, creativity and critical thinking in our youth.

Finally let us dedicate ourselves to true patriotism.

Happy 2007!
