*July 7, Washington, DC: BAFI NIGHT ’07 CULTURAL PROGRAM at the end of Bangladeshi-American Convention 2007 will feature singers Ferdous and Habib Wahid, Sabina Yasmin, Shakila Zafar, Shahnaz Belly and Hyder Husyn; dancers Shamim Ara Nipa and Shibli Muhammad; actors Riaz and Mahfuz Ahmed will also participate in the program with their co-stars Purnima and Aupee Karim; and comedian Nakul Kumar Biswas. AWARDS & PRIZES

 

*The Kishor M. Kulkarni Arts & Humanities Prize on Modern India  

 

Indiana University invites entries for the following prizes:

1st Place - $1,500.00

2nd Place - $1,000.00

3rd Place - $500.00

 

The competition is open to permanent residents and citizens of the United States who are high school juniors or seniors, undergraduate or graduate students at a U.S. college or university, or between the ages of 16 and 25, with ancestry in what is now the Republic of India, whose principal residence is in the United States.

 

Entries may be submitted in one of two categories: (1) Analytic - an essay analysis of political, economic, cultural or social issues as they impact  modern India or (2) Creative Writing - a short story, poetry, novella or drama related to modern India. A distinguished panel of jurors will evaluate submissions in each category, and first, second, and third places will be awarded to the best qualified entries from both categories. High School students will be eligible to win only the third place award.

 

Entries must be original work primarily produced within twelve (12) monthsprior to the application deadline. Entries must be postmarked by no later than July 31, 2007.

*Beyond the Golden Rule: A Parent’s Guide to Preventing and Responding to Prejudice offers practical advice for caregivers of children, in three age groups: the preschool years (ages 2-5), the elementary and preteen years (ages 6-12) and the teen years (ages 13-17) to nurture appreciation of human differences. The guide uses varied and fine examples from so many families in the United States, and the wisdom of the experts, and concludes with specific tips, according to Dr. Kerby T. Alvy, the founder and executive director of the Ceneter for the Improvement of Child Caring in Studio City, California.

*The Multnomah Youth Commission seeks youth who will be between the ages of 13-21 by August 1, 2007 and live, work, or go to school in Portland or Multnomah County to serve during 2007-2008.  This is a great opportunity for young people to serve as community leaders, get to know how government works from the inside, and develop skills like public speaking, critical thinking, and community organizing.
